A telescope is an instrument designed for the observation of remote objects by the collection of electromagnetic radiation. The first known practically functioning telescopes were invented in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 17th century. "Telescopes" can refer to a whole range of instruments operating in most regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The word "telescope" (from the Greek tele = 'far' and skopein = 'to look or see'; teleskopos = 'far-seeing') was coined in 1611 by the Greek mathematician Giovanni Demisiani for one of Galileo Galilei's instruments presented at a banquet at the Accademia dei Lincei. In the Starry Messenger Galileo had used the term "perspicillum". From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Telescopes" What's the copyright law regarding pictures taken with the Hubble and other space telescopes? Q. Are the Hubble, ESO, ESA, NASA and Spitzer telescopes' deep-space photos protected by copyright, or are they open to use because they were obtained with government funds? What are the pertinent rules of usage? If permission is needed, where would that be obtained?. Asked by ciamalo - Sun Sep 2 12:53:13 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ciamalo ... I thing Bryce's advice is right on. I don't really have a better answer. I did want to add this, though: I can imagine an instance where an individual or non-government enterprise might pay NASA to carry a payload into space for them or where such an enterprise might lease NASA's equipment for a special mission. In such a case, the data collected during the period of the lease may be considered the property of the enterprise and thus be subject to the same protections afforded to data collected by the company whenever they use their own equipment. Mind you, I don't know that for fact; I'm merely speculating. Answered by Tony NY - Sun Sep 2 15:31:27 2007 What do you think the next generation of telescopes will be? Q. They will be visual, radio, interferometry, and infrared functions. On earth we have the world's largest reflector in production. The main mirror will be 100 meters wide. Answered by Sidewinder - Mon Jul 16 17:15:01 2007 I'm looking for good diagrams explaining the difference between refracting and reflecting telescopes.?
Q. I own both kinds and will be teaching a bunch of cub scouts about astronomy, the solar system and telescopes. Where can I get a good cross sectional diagram of reflecting and refracting telescopes? I've found a few "cheesy" diagrams on line, but would like something that looks good that I can enlarge to poster size. Asked by Dave B. - Fri Aug 10 10:03:05 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. This site will help... Go to very bottom and click on the links to other stuff. There is one really cool thing where you move the bar and it takes the telescope done to its key components.
